Scottsdale Allocates $40 Million for Old Town Revitalization

Comprehensive Plan Aims to Enhance Infrastructure, Safety, and Visitor Experience

Scottsdale has unveiled an ambitious $40 million initiative to rejuvenate Old Town, focusing on infrastructure enhancements, safety improvements, and elevating the overall visitor experience.

City Manager Greg Caton emphasized the importance of this investment, stating, "City staff and I have spent considerable time speaking with merchants and property owners in the Old Town and we have consistently heard interest for the city to invest in public infrastructure."

The revitalization plan encompasses several key projects:

Brown Avenue Parking Garage Expansion: The existing three-story structure will be expanded to accommodate over 200 additional parking spaces. This expansion aims to alleviate parking congestion and support local businesses. However, some community members have expressed concerns, leading to a petition opposing the plan.

Entertainment District Parking Garage Enhancement: Plans are underway to enlarge this facility, with public input meetings scheduled for later this year to gather community feedback.

Main Street Revitalization: Stretching from 69th Street to Scottsdale Road, this project will introduce improved sidewalks, enhanced landscaping, and upgraded lighting to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment. Community meetings are planned for the fall to discuss these enhancements.

Additional improvements include the installation of new granite in various parts of Old Town, updated signage to assist navigation, and the addition of ashtrays that reflect the area's unique style.

Projects already in progress include the repainting of the Wells Fargo Avenue Parking Garage and the Old Town Pavement Improvement Project, which involves resurfacing streets, alleys, and parking lots to extend their lifespan.

Tourism and Events Director Rachel Smetana highlighted the significance of these efforts, noting that Old Town attracts visitors from around the globe. She added that with Scottsdale's 75th anniversary approaching in 2026, residents can anticipate additional celebrations and activities.

These comprehensive efforts underscore Scottsdale's commitment to preserving the charm of Old Town while adapting to the evolving needs of residents and visitors alike.
