Scottsdale Expands Desert Rescue Operations With New 6-Dog K-9 Team |
Meet the fearless new K-9 team saving lives in the Scottsdale desert - 6 dogs, endless heroics. |
Scottsdale's vast desert landscapes offer breathtaking views and challenging trails, attracting countless hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.
However, the rugged terrain and extreme temperatures can pose significant risks, leading to situations where individuals become lost or injured.
To address these challenges, Scottsdale has introduced a specialized search and rescue team featuring highly trained K-9 units.
The City of Scottsdale Search and Rescue Team (COSSAR) is a collaborative effort that unites personnel from the Scottsdale Fire Department, Police Department, and preserve staff.
This integrated approach ensures a swift and coordinated response to emergencies within the city's extensive preserve system and open spaces.
Central to COSSAR's operations are six dedicated search and rescue dogs: Leon, Kory, Ploy, Finnley, Sully, and Dillon.
Each canine is trained in specific disciplines, such as air scent detection, enabling them to locate individuals over large outdoor areas, and human remains detection, assisting in the recovery of deceased persons under various environmental conditions.
These dogs underwent specialized training at the National Association for Search and Rescue.
Complementing the K-9 units are ten certified handlers, each accredited at the SARTECH II level by the National Association for Search and Rescue.
This certification reflects a nationally recognized standard in the search and rescue field.
Additionally, two seasoned volunteer handlers with extensive field experience contribute to the team's capabilities.
Scottsdale Fire Chief Tom Shannon emphasized the necessity of such a team, stating, "Scottsdale's preserve system is one of our community's greatest assets, but the desert environment can quickly become dangerous, especially during extreme heat or when hikers are unprepared. This team provides a dedicated, highly trained search and rescue resource focused specifically on challenging terrain."
Beyond canine operations, COSSAR members receive comprehensive training in navigation, unified command coordination, evidence preservation, technical communications, and responder safety.
While the primary focus is on Scottsdale, the team is also prepared to assist neighboring jurisdictions upon request.
City Manager Greg Caton highlighted the initiative as a testament to Scottsdale's commitment to proactive public safety investment.
He noted, "Scottsdale residents and visitors enjoy unparalleled access to our preserve system and open spaces, and public safety remains one of our highest priorities."
Looking ahead, the city plans to enhance COSSAR's capabilities by expanding ground search operations and integrating advanced technologies tailored for preserve and open space missions.
As Scottsdale continues to prioritize the safety of its community, the introduction of this specialized search and rescue team underscores a proactive approach to managing the unique challenges presented by the city's desert environment.
