Scottsdale Farmers Market to Relocate Amidst Parking Garage Expansion |
Community Voices Concerns Over Move to City Hall Parking Lot |
Scottsdale's cherished Old Town Farmers Market is set to relocate in October 2026 due to the expansion of the existing parking structure at First Street and Brown Avenue.
The City Council approved the move to the City Hall parking lot at 75th Street and Bennie Gonzales Way, aiming to minimize disruption during construction.
City Manager Greg Caton emphasized the importance of maintaining the market's vitality, stating, "The farmers market is one of Scottsdale’s most loved traditions. Moving it to City Hall keeps it close to the heart of Old Town and gives vendors and visitors the space they need while we make improvements elsewhere. It’s a win for residents, small businesses, and the community as a whole."
However, the decision has sparked significant community debate.
Many residents and business owners express concerns that the new location may not attract the same foot traffic, potentially impacting vendor revenues and the market's atmosphere.
A petition titled "Save the Old Town Scottsdale Farmers Market – Stop the Parking Garage!" has garnered substantial support, urging the city to reconsider the garage expansion and preserve the market's current location.
Despite the opposition, city officials are proceeding with the $15 million parking garage project, funded by a 2019 bond.
The expansion aims to add over 200 parking spaces to accommodate growing demand from local businesses and events.
Design work is underway, with construction slated to begin in late 2026.
In response to community feedback, the city has committed to engaging with residents and vendors throughout the design process to ensure the new parking structure complements Old Town's historic character.
Public meetings are scheduled to gather input and address concerns.
As the relocation approaches, the city plans to implement measures to support vendors and maintain the market's appeal.
These include enhanced signage, improved parking access, and promotional efforts to inform the public about the new location.
The Old Town Farmers Market has been a staple in Scottsdale since 2009, operating every Saturday from October through June.
It features approximately 100 vendors offering fresh produce, baked goods, specialty foods, and locally made products, fostering a vibrant community atmosphere.
While the relocation presents challenges, city officials and market organizers are working collaboratively to ensure the market continues to thrive in its new setting.
Residents are encouraged to participate in upcoming public meetings to share their perspectives and contribute to the planning process.
