Scottsdale’s Water Future Faces Big Questions

Exploring Scottsdale water supply and Scottsdale water resources

🔥 Trending

In recent years, discussions about water in the Southwest have evolved.

While concerns about drought and Colorado River reductions persist, there's a growing acknowledgment of the proactive measures being taken to ensure long-term water reliability.

For residents of Scottsdale, the message is clear: the city's water supply is reliable, resilient, and actively managed.

The Southwest faces significant long-term water challenges.

The Colorado River remains under pressure, negotiations over operating rules continue, and communities across the region must adapt to hotter and drier conditions.

These realities are not going away.

However, Scottsdale has been preparing for these challenges for decades.

Prior to the mid-1980s, the city relied almost entirely on groundwater.

Today, approximately 90% of Scottsdale's drinking water comes from renewable surface water sources: the Central Arizona Project (CAP) and the Salt River Project (SRP).

This shift demonstrates a commitment to sustainable water management.

Scottsdale's CAP allocation is substantial, and the city has invested in infrastructure to treat and deliver this water efficiently.

The CAP Water Treatment Plant, located at the Scottsdale Water Campus, can treat up to 70 million gallons of water per day.

Additionally, the Chaparral Water Treatment Plant, which treats SRP water, has a capacity of 30 million gallons per day.

These facilities ensure that residents have access to high-quality water year-round.

Groundwater serves as a backup to surface water supplies.

To maintain the health of the aquifer, Scottsdale employs advanced water recycling and recharge programs.

The city's Advanced Water Treatment Plant is one of the most sophisticated recycled water facilities in the world.

Since 1998, this facility has enabled Scottsdale to recharge over 70 billion gallons of water into local aquifers, safeguarding the city's long-term water supply.

Water quality is a top priority.

Scottsdale Water performs thousands of tests annually to ensure that drinking water meets or surpasses all federal standards.

The 2025 Water Quality Report confirms that the city's water is safe and of high quality.

In response to ongoing drought conditions, Scottsdale has updated its Drought Management Plan.

This plan outlines specific actions to be taken at various stages of drought, ensuring that the city can adapt to changing conditions without compromising water availability.

Residents are encouraged to participate in conservation efforts, recognizing that every drop counts in the desert environment.

Scottsdale's proactive approach to water management serves as a model for other communities facing similar challenges.

By investing in infrastructure, embracing innovative technologies, and fostering a culture of conservation, the city is ensuring a resilient water future for its residents.

While the broader challenges of the Southwest's water supply remain, Scottsdale's commitment to sustainable water resources offers a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of forward-thinking planning.
