Why Many Call Scottsdale the Valley’s Worst on the Road

Despite accolades, local drivers voice concerns over Scottsdale's traffic safety

🔥 Trending

Scottsdale's roads have become a hot topic among Valley residents, with many expressing frustration over local driving habits.

While some cities claim to have the worst drivers, recent statistics suggest Scottsdale might be a contender.

In 2024, Scottsdale reported 4,219 traffic incidents, resulting in 15 fatalities and 1,421 injuries.

These figures contribute to Maricopa County's overall high accident rates, with the county accounting for over 70% of Arizona's crashes that year.

Local online forums are abuzz with residents sharing their experiences.

One user recounted, "I was driving north on the 101 near Via de Ventura around 10 am and glanced over to see the driver next to me just casually eating a big ceramic bowl of oatmeal, no hands on the wheel."

Another commented on aggressive driving behaviors: "You can be driving 80+ in the HOV lane, and people will get right on your ass, I’m talking less than 3 feet, and start honking and flashing their lights. It’s insane!"

However, contrasting reports paint a different picture.

In 2025, Scottsdale was ranked as the fourth-best U.S. city to drive in, according to a WalletHub study.

Scottsdale also secured the seventh spot on the Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report, highlighting its commitment to traffic safety.

City officials attribute these rankings to proactive measures.

Erin Walsh, the city's transportation and infrastructure communications supervisor, emphasized the role of the Traffic Management Center in monitoring and adjusting traffic flow to enhance safety.

Despite these accolades, recent incidents have raised concerns.

In November 2025, a dump truck overturned on Loop 101, spilling hot asphalt and causing significant delays.

Earlier in May, a fatal crash on SR 87 near McDowell Road led to road closures and highlighted ongoing safety challenges.

As Scottsdale continues to grow, balancing its reputation for safety with residents' experiences remains a priority.

Drivers are encouraged to stay vigilant and adhere to traffic laws to ensure the well-being of all road users.
